The Clip Art Exhibition

Currently at Peg Powler Gallery at Green Dragon Studios, we have the world's first exhibition of 'clip art' - the free illustrations that come with word processing software etc. Our reasoning behind this show was initially for a laugh, but it has also become part of an ongoing interest in the aesthetics of a period when computers became common in the home, office and school but before the rise of the internet. This was a time when unless you had all the latest graphics cards etc to play games, the way to get some fun out of a machine primarily made for spread sheets and writing documents was through things like minesweeper, MS Paint and the clip art. The drawings, which appeared in flyers, posters and newsletters and presentations across the world, are funny, familiar, sometimes strange. All created by anonymous artists, they represent a modern form of pop art, considered disposable and utilitarian. This show shines a focus on clip art in the way that in the 50s Eduardo Paolozzi drew attention to the film posters and comics considered detritus by most people. Now superseded by the likes of Google images, clip art belongs to a genre of PC imagery that can now be seen as drawing to a close and viewed in retrospect, embodying many cultural indicators of the time they were created for.

'Paperbugs' is an exhibition featuring festival goers and performers' drawings of Stockton International Riverside Festival - one of the most vibrant street theatre festivals on Earth - in association with the Big Draw 2011. On show at Green Dragon Studios, Stockton on Tees. Monday to Saturday all day ( early closing Thurs and Saturday). A Peg Powler Presentation.

Last week my Peg Powler Gallery co-conspirator Rebecca Little joined me in travelling down to to the Black Heart in Camden to take part in the Earth's best comedy club Lost Treasures of the Black Heart, created by our friend and all round hero Josie Long. We did a Bad Art School drawing workshop in between all the amazing comedians, with the most lovely and smart audience imaginable really going for it. Also, on Saturday, we did a Middlesbrough version of (our award winning art thing) A Secret History Walk - combining weird local history with drawing and exploring. Thanks to everyone who took part in the event - part of discover middlesbrough, it was a really nice day.

1. Cement Factory, a film I made with Sheena Cox, had its premiere last Saturday as part of Square Eyes film festival. A review of both the film and the festival here http://fansonline.net/onegiantleap/article.php?id=608

It was a great occassion, thanks to Russell the curator of Square Eyes for helping us complete the magical jouney of making a £0 budget satirical movie about murders in a cement manufacturing company.

2. I had some zines in a zine show in San Jose. I have virtually no more information but I hope it went well.

3. This Sunday will me and Rebecca Little of the Peg Powler Gallery do our debut cabert type event. Our show is called The Bad Art Show and it the latest incarnation of the Bad Art Workshops and shows we have done before. Our special guests and members of the audience will attempt some daring drawing related stunts, and hopefully create some wonky art brut masterpieces in the process. The gig occurs at The Waiting Room in Eaglescliffe and is the support act to ultra class comedian Josie Long.

Saturday daytime, 25th of June 2011, the film I made with Sheena Cox, James Harris, Craig Thornton, John Noble, Jen Nelson, Rebecca Little and Oli Heffernan will get its long awaited public premiere. Cement Factory

Cement Factory is an independent, $0 budget film that I produced and, with Sheena Cox directed. We filmed it this Summer in a day on a flip ultra, in an old office building (which was about to be turned into what is now the hq of Writers Block North East). It stars James Harris, John Noble, Craig Thornton and Sheena Cox and has a superb score by Oli Heffernan (Detective Instinct, Shrug, Idiot Savant, British Lichen Society). Jen Nelson styled Mr Noble specially for the film and Rebecca Little was production assistant. The dialogue was all improvised by the cast, who did an excellent job. The film is in glorious grainy, wobbly black and white and contains workplace tedium, satire, horror, and magical realism. For our first film, Sheena and me are pretty happy and we're both looking forward to more projects.

Bad Art

On Tuesday the 14th Peg Powler Gallery at Green Dragon Studios, Stockton on Tees, played host to a 'Bad Art Workshop'. Amy from TFM Radio's breakfast show was among those who came down to draw 'badly' on purpose. Bad Art workshops, devised by Peg Powler Gallery co-founder AJ Garrett, aka me, are all about exploring the good things about crude drawing and putting the fun back into art in a relaxed and supportive environment.

It was a great evening, I've done quite a few of these workshops now with different people from different backgrounds and the feedback has been dead good, as have some of the drawings (especially encouraging is when its the first time people have drawn since school!).

Peg Powler Gallery, the independent art gallery that me and Rebecca Little run will be opening up back in Green Dragon Studios, Stockton on Tees with a solo show by the mighty Shaun Elliot. We've shown a few things by Shaun in our two group shows, this will be Shaun's first ever solo show. In fact Peg Powler Gallery is the first gallery to show Shaun's work and we are highly excited to have discovered Shaun's immediate, jittery, cubist drawings. Like Shaun they are unique, funny, and real.

For our current exhibition, The Peg Powler Summer Show, Peg Powler Gallery is taking place on floor one of ARC for the very fist time and running until the end of August. As a mobile art gallery, we are delighted to be in such a vibrant public and cultural space. Our second group show presents a diverse display of the creative efforts of artists Peg Powler knows and loves - an alternative view of the local art scene and taste of what can be expected from Peg Powler Gallery. The show includes dedicated artists who work from home, who don't necessarily have studios or art degrees, but whose art is engaging and individual. Danielle Velterelle's photography combines the experimental and the personal. Kingsley Chapman has used old toys to produce a joyfully strange sculpture. And Middlesborough's outsider artist Shaun Elliot produces jittery cubist drawings informed by his unique personality. Plus stills from up-coming art film Cement Factory, Rebecca Little's zoo architecture illustrations and a painting by Middlesbrough underground artist Vicky Duffy.

Peg Powler Presents: ZINE & Middlesbrough Zine Fest

For weeks, as part of Middlesbrough's 'We Are Open' project, Rebecca Little and me were curating and working in a Pop-Up Studio in central boro. More details are on the pegpowler website . There are a lot more photos and videos from the stint to come to, now that I have rediscovered my camera, which got mildly lost recently.

Entitled Peg Powler Presents ZINE, the studio was all about making, showing and selling zines (small press DIY books, comix and magazines). We had a collection of zines from across the world and from the local area and we tried to get as many local ones in the shop as possible too. We had a reference library of rare zines, a zine shop, workshops and our most special day Middlesbrough Zine Festival. The festival was one day where we had an exhibition of zine art, an 18+ room containing zines of strong material ( the Obzine room) several workshops including a Bad Art vs Zine that resulted in some bizarre and wonderful creations, spoken word and Q+As from local zinesters such as James Harris and Teesside's king of zines Rob Nichols of award winning fanzine Fly Me To The Moon and more.

During our time there we made things, met some great people, and helped get some new local zines off the ground which is most excellent news. We'd like to thank everyone that came down, helped out with supplies, bought a zine, read a zine, made a zine and looked at the fish in the window.

Last Wednesday me and Rebecca Little went on Bob Fischer's show on BBC Tees to talk about our art space Peg Powler Gallery and about Rebecca's upcoming exhibition of photographs and found objects from Stockton flea market which launches on TUESDAY MAY 4TH at 5pm and is open to all by the way. It was a great to go on Bob's show, it is the premier arts programme in the region as well as being a fun show to listen to. Estelle is a zine style underground comic book made in Teesside and drawn by artist AJ Garrett, and co-written by AJ and the artist Alyson Agar. The comic is about an elderly newspaper cartoonist named Estelle who lives in a big apartment building populated by cliches and has drawn a daily comic strip every day for 75 years for a big newspaper that doesn't appreciate her. Estelle's life is then altered when someone gives her a toy computer that turns out to be haunted by an overbearing ancient spirit.
Drawing from inspirations ranging from Chester Gould to Madeline Kahn, we came up with the story in the coffee shop of Borders (RIP) and AJ illustrated it with pen and ink and put it all together using no computers, just cutting, pasting and photocopying.
A5 size, 36 black and white pages plus card cover (colour may vary, if you desperately want a particular colour just ask)

Estelle is a zine style underground comic book made in Teesside and drawn by artist AJ Garrett, and co-written by me (AJ) and the artist Alyson Agar. The comic is about an elderly newspaper cartoonist named Estelle who lives in a big apartment building populated by cliches and has drawn a daily comic strip every day for 75 years for a big newspaper that doesn't appreciate her. We came up with the story in Starbucks in Borders (RIP) and I illustrated it with pen and ink and put it all together using no computers, just cutting, pasting and photocopying.

Friday's launch party will feature sets from Shrug, Pellethead and some strange adventures in audio-tape by M. Neil, plus artwork from the comic, Alyson and AJ doing DJ'ing, and the world's first chance to buy the 36page comic book itself. This drawing of Queen Victoria was created during a Bad Art Workshop by operative Lynsey Barwick. The mission was to do a portrait - normally a flattering picture drawn from life - of someone not present an in an unflattering way. This portrait shows England's longest reigning Queen without the glamour of traditional royal portraits. Victoria is agent Barwick's favourite monarch.

I'm curating an show in the exhbition space of the excellent Designers Market place pop up shop on Albert Road (near the town hall, by the backside of the h&m and 'the mall'). It will be on from Monday afternoon and the shop is open Monday 12-5 and Tuesday to Saturday 10-5 so come on over.

The show is called Bad Art Academy and features a combination of art from the Bad Art Show that was originally shown at Peg Powler and some drawing challenges that you can have a go at right there in the shop - so if you can draw, great, and if you think you can't draw even better.

I will be in there loads, so come and have a look and say hello and you can do a drawing too if you like.

Greetings my magnificent minions. As I sit on my throne and survey the fashion universe I observe the loss of one of style's most powerful sorcerers. The news has reached my crystal (plastic) ball that the mighty Alexander McQueen has perished. I shall tell you why McQueen was a power to be reckoned with in my eyes...

Fashion, as I constantly declare, is not a mere triviality but a source of true power. I would never have risen to be Lord of Snake Mountain without being the most striking shade of blue with the ideal fur / hood / green make-up combination and a crew of wildly individual and luridly dressed henchmen and demonesses. To dress in a drab, boring or simply unremarkable way, to blend in or be 'modest' - I would sooner cast myself into the tar swamps of Eternia. But to harness the forces of super-style, to be so unique, bold and extrovert that your enemies are dazzled into confusion and the mentally weak are so awe struck you may do with them as you please - that is glorious.

The world of McQueen was stalked by beautiful monsters, robots from the future, cloaked visions of elegant weirdness. Pretentious fashion events were transformed into science fiction dreamscapes where true style's true enemies - boredom and conformity - could never survive.

His admirable attempt to destroy Lady Ga Ga by persuading her to wear his delightfully deadly 'Armadillo' heels has not succeeded (yet). But he has made his mark as a Master of the Fashion Universe. "

Operation Bad Art rolls on/ Middlesbrough Designers Market Place / Peg Polwer Gallery

Bad Art Revolution continues. The Bad Art Show at Peg Powler Gallery at Green Dragon Studios, Stockton on Tees was a smash hit described as 'its bad...but its good?', 'awesome' (Phil Chapman of popular beat combo The Chapman Family) and, 'I like the art, can I have some cake now'.

The project continues - rouge cells and independent versions have been reported as springing up, led by operatives from the original workshop; several more official workshops will be happening this month in Stockton and Middlesbrough; and from Monday 22nd to Saturday 28th of March AJ Garrett's Bad Art Revolution hits Designer's Market Place pop-up shop in Middlesbrough.

There will be an interactive Bad Art Revolution show, featuring art from the original Operation Bad Art exhibition, never seen before drawings, and the chance to take part and contribute during the week. All this will take place in the exhibition space of Designers Market place pop-up shop, 5-97 Albert Road, Middlesbrough, TS1 2PA. Opposite the Town Hall. The Designers Market Place is known for bringing together high-end art, design and fashion products and this temporary boutique will be in central boro for all of April and May, with rotating exhibitions in a separated exhibition space. This will be the first full exhibition featuring drawings from my Bad Art project - a stall at a club night in Middlesbrough and two Bad Art workshops in Stockton in which people were challenged to create 'the worst art possible' - to make drawing with markers and crayons under tight time constraints often with strict and strange stipulations. With all the neuroses that comes attached to making a 'good' or 'tasteful' drawing it is possible to have fun drawing and create a unique, personal drawing that is more exciting and enjoyable to look at than so much of the cold, vague 'academic' art clogging up our modern art institutes.

The Bad Art Show will also see the launch of Bad Art Revolution#1, a zine of pure power.

HANSEL’S DE-TOX

OR THE DETOXIFICATION OF HANSEL

Ink and water

A sequence of illustrations for an adult fairy tale loosely along the lines of Hansel and Gretel and similar tales. The story of Hansel and Gretel dates back to medieval times and exists in many different versions according to time and place. One of the recurring themes of the stories is a Witch who captures and a boy and a girl with the intention of only eating the boy, and using the girl as a servant. The psychological subtexts of such stories are endless.

Hansel’s Detox makes the victims into young adults and considers a society of obsessed with both hedonistic living and the quest for a perfect body and good health. While the traditional witch wants to fatten her Hansel up, this witch can’t eat Hansel because he is too fatty and contains all the toxins and impurities that come with modern life. The health conscious Witch encourages Hansel to become a fitness enthusiast who values physical perfection above all. Meanwhile Gretel falls victim to the counter paradigm of the person who must sacrifice looking after their personal health in order to keep with a never ending workload.

Hansel’s fate in this Grand Guignol story asks if the quest for physical perfection is ultimately futile, and what are the motives of those who seek physical perfection in others.

The use of sequential images each accompanied by a two line verse and a piece of prose is after Alfred Bestall who wrote and illustrated the Rupert the Bear strip from 1935 to 1965.

All through August in the gallery at Green Dragon Studios, an art show featuring ghoulish fashion illustrations, the strange tale of Hansel's De-tox, and wobbly art-game The University of Doom.

Green Dragon Studios are located round the corner from The Georgian Theatre in the town of Stockton on Tees (postcode TS18 1AT), and accessed through a big green door. The Studios are open more or less every day (except when the festival is on) the gallery is on the ground floor, tell the person on reception you're there to check the art out. This is the spiel that accompanied the game when I first exhibited it, its as good an introduction as any...

The University of Doom is a conceptual board game about some of the dangers, pitfalls and cataclysms that can be associated with attending university.

Using illustration, miniatures and interactivity ideas and personal feelings about the flip-side of higer education. A minuature campus consisting of several areas, each populated by a different type of monster, players can try to confornt or avoid the dangers, although the points system means they will have a better chance of surviving the final stage if the confront and overcome. The monsters are part of the symbolism of the game, representing different abstract menaces of university, and are inspired by several interviews with people who have are attending uni.

Inspiration for the piece includes the chaotic, skeleton filled art of Breugel's Triumph of Death; the kitsch horror of Jake and Dinos Chapman; popular culture such as the MB games Ghost Castle and Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson's Dungeons and Dragons; and the innovative fashion imagery of model maker Chrissie MacDonald. Life drawing, primary research at campuses and fashion illustration went into creating the game.

Assembled into a fized position for this show, The University of Doom is modular and can be rearranged, reduced or expanded. In the future I will develop this work and create more art games.
