February Friday the 6th - At Middlesbrough's beautiful Victorian era music hall The Empire - an evening of movie magic where your £6 plus 80p booking fee gets you several art films in the form of trailers, b-movies and a cartoon created by people like Tom Rubnitz and David Shrigley followed by our feature presentation David Lynch's masterpiece Blue Velvet. Coinciding with David Lynch Naming – an exhibition of the paintings of legendary filmmaker and artist David Lynch at mima – this special screening of Blue Velvet will recreate for one night only the experience of old fashioned movie magic: when an admission ticket to the local picture palace guaranteed you a cartoon, a funny ‘short subject’, a supporting film and a feature presentation all for the cost of admission. 
Blue Velvet (1986)is arguably Lynch’s most iconic film, described by critics as a seminal and disturbing masterpiece that changed cinema forever. Supporting the main feature is a programme of specially selected shorts from a variety of artist-filmmakers including David Shrigley and Shezad Dawood. This Art Cinema Special Event takes place at The Empire, Middlesbrough’s opulent Victorian palace of varieties, creating the perfect environment for a dark and diverse cinematic experience.
